How To Determine Your "Real Average" Blood Pressure
Measure in the morning and evening for seven days: early in the morning, and at least two hours after dinner. Each time:
- 1Take 2 readings in the morning and 2 readings in the evening every day for 7 consecutive days. This totals 28 overall readings.
- 2Morning readings should be taken before any medications, breakfast, or coffee.
- 3Evening readings should be taken before bed. Timing should be approximately 10-12 hours apart from your morning readings.
- 4Between readings, wait 1 minute.
- 5At the end of the week, day 1 readings are discarded, and the average of days 2 through 7 is calculated.
Your real average, 14 readings
7-day average*Average: In the Hypertension Canada protocol to determine hypertension using home monitoring, the readings from Day 1 are not included.

Your Questions Answered
1.What is a normal blood pressure range, and why is it important to maintain it?
Understanding the normal blood pressure range (typically around 120/80 mm Hg) is crucial for assessing cardiovascular health. Maintaining a healthy blood pressure helps reduce the risk of heart disease, stroke, and other related conditions.
2.How often should I measure my blood pressure at home, and what is the best time to do it?
Regular monitoring is key. For most individuals, measuring blood pressure at home once or twice a day at the same time is recommended. Mornings are often suggested, as they provide a baseline before daily activities.
3.Can stress affect blood pressure, and what strategies can help manage stress-related hypertension?
Yes, stress can influence blood pressure. Employing stress management techniques such as deep breathing, meditation, and regular exercise can help mitigate its impact on hypertension.
4.What are the potential symptoms of high blood pressure, and when should I seek medical attention?
High blood pressure is often called the "silent killer" as it may not present obvious symptoms. Regular monitoring with a home blood pressure monitor is essential. Seek medical attention if you experience severe headaches, shortness of breath, chest pain, or visual disturbances.
5.Are there lifestyle changes that can positively impact blood pressure levels?
Adopting a healthy lifestyle can significantly improve blood pressure. This includes maintaining a balanced diet low in sodium, regular exercise, limiting alcohol intake, quitting smoking, and managing stress effectively. Always consult with a healthcare professional before making significant lifestyle changes.
6.Why are my blood pressure readings different each time I measure?
It’s completely normal for blood pressure to fluctuate throughout the day. Stress, movement, posture, hydration, and even talking can affect results. Instead of relying on one reading with a blood pressure monitor in Canada, take two to three measurements one minute apart and record the average. Consistency in timing and posture matters more than a single number.
7.Should I measure blood pressure on my left or right arm?
You can use either arm, but it’s best to use the same arm consistently for comparison. During the first few days, measure both arms and continue using the arm that gives the higher reading. Keeping your method consistent ensures more reliable tracking.
